In fact, experts call this stretch connecting to Rumi Darwaza more stunning than the ones based at European cities like Paris, Rome, Constantinople and London. It is located adjacent to Asafi Masjid and has also been icon for Lucknow City.

Rumi Darwaza History and Architecture


The man behind its construction is Nawab Asaf-ud-Daulah. Rumi Darwaza simply symbolizes some of the finest architectural style of Awadh. The reason why it is also referred as Turkish Gateway is due to the fact that it is very much similar to the designs of the gates found at ancient Constantinople. The Persian term Rumi is conceived from the contemporary day Rome, which was based in Istanbul – the Eastern Roman Empire Capital city. This gate has a whopping height of 60 feet, while its uppermost portion carries an umbrella having an octagon shape aesthetically carved over it, which you can easily access via the staircases.

Over the top of this gate, a huge size lantern was placed, which helped in glowing and lighting up the structure during the night time making the view all together fabulous for people dwelling around it. Several small size water based jets used to rush out from the sides of the arch from the most incredibly beautiful carved flower buds, which eventually used to give a feeling of a gateway to Haven. Unlike the Bara Imambara, Rumi Darwaza was also constructed under the Food for Work program during the devastating famine.

One of the popular reports, which talks a lot about its beauty and elegance is the report of George Russell who was deputed in the city as Journalist from the known newspaper of the United States called The New York Times during the 19th century. As per the reports, this man has accompanied with the British insurgents when they entered the city in the year 1858 defeating the rulers. After the invasion, the British were seen maintaining the beauty of the stretch that connects between Chattar Manzil to Rumi Darwaza.
